4G: Mobile's Taxonomy Breaks Free
December 7, 2006
4G or not 4G? Who cares, say some vendors.
Mobile operators and equipment manufacturers have been talking about the move to so-called "4G" networks and services for some time, but what has become clear is that the term 4G can mean different things to different people.
The evolution of mobile networks from 1G, 2G, 2.5G through to 3G has largely followed fairly well-defined paths set out by standards bodies, and each evolutionary step has generally adhered to certain criteria that determine whether or not a service is, say, "3G".

A Networking Matrix

A look at the company's acquisitions this year highlights just how far-reaching its mission is in the start-up world: Peakstream, a maker of software for running powerful computers; FeedBurner, which creates Web feeds for bloggers and podcasters to distribute and monetize their content; Greenborder Technologies Inc., a maker of software that protects PCs and corporate networks from malicious emails; Marratech AB, a producer of software for video conferencing over the Internet; and Adscape Media Inc., whose technology inserts advertising into video games. And Google plans to knock further into the wireless handheld market, a hot area for start-ups developing technology around mobile marketing, content and search.

Mobile Standards: Playing Leapfrog
January 1, 2007
The rumblings over 3G commitments and coverage reverberate louder, but that has not stopped vendors and operators looking to the next mobile step 4G. But spectrum issues and recriminations over standards threaten to bring matters to a head before the first shots have been fired in anger. One of the big incumbent vendors, Nortel, says operators should look no further than mobile WiMAX for 4G. It says by using such technology, operators currently at the second generation, as well as fixed operators without wireless networks, could leapfrog the big brands which are stuck with getting the most from their 3G investments.
3GSM: CDMA Stalwarts Cautious Over Technology’s Future
February 15, 2007
When the industry began laying down its stakes in 3G, Chelmsford, Mass.-based Airvana put all of its bets on a single technology, CDMA 1X EV-DO. It turned out to be a smart move. Its software, chassis card and radio network controller technology are the standard in a good deal of the world’s 3G CDMA networks—publicly acknowledged by Nortel Networks as its base station technology for EV-DO and Revision A and not-so-secretly used by other Tier I vendors.
Ops Show Renewed Interest in Rev. B
May 23, 2007
Despite early doubts about the need for 1xEV-DO Revision B, some CDMA2000 operators are gearing up to deploy the technology. Some unnamed operators are planning to implement technology trials of Rev. B this summer, David Nowicki, vice president of product management and marketing at Airvana, told Informa Telecoms & Media. Rev. B, which would be rolled out via a software upgrade, enables an operator to combine multiple data carriers to achieve data throughput up to 73.5Mbps in the forward link and 27Mbps in the reverse link. "The traffic is exploding in the networks," Nowicki said, adding that steadily increasing traffic alone would require EV-DO operator to add data carriers. Rev. B is attracting interest because "it's an easy way to get even faster data rates in certain pockets" of coverage, said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group. The technology could also support new applications, such as mobile TV or streaming music, concurrently with a voice call. Many have questioned the need for Rev. B, but Nowicki says cutting-edge operators are keenly interested in the technology, now that they have taken care of the logistics of upgrading their Rev. 0 networks to Rev. A. But there are questions about the next step in CDMA's evolutionary path: ultramobile broadband, which uses OFDM on the downlink. Jose Rivera, director of products and development at Centennial Puerto Rico, says the futures of UMB and even Rev. B are uncertain. He said that infrastructure vendors "have really great PowerPoint slides" about enabling advanced services, "but you must have terminals, which is how you materialize services to customers." He added that Wi-Fi took off because of the broad availability of compatible laptop computers but it's not clear whether manufacturers are prepared to support future developments in CDMA2000 with a sufficient array of devices. Some say the recent actions of top U.S. CDMA operators indicate that UMB will fail. Last month, Verizon Wireless joined the European Telecommunications Standards Institute and became an individual member of 3GPP, prompting speculation that the carrier might choose LTE rather than UMB for its mobile broadband evolution. Sprint Nextel is deploying 802.16e mobile WiMAX at 2.5GHz and is a member of the LTE-oriented Next Generation Mobile Network initiative. Even Centennial is dabbling in other technologies, having recently acquired Islanet, a 2.5GHz WiMAX operator in Puerto Rico. LaForge cautions against reading too much into the moves. "All operators are going to study all the various technologies," he said, adding that even operators who are expected to take the LTE path are looking at WiMAX. He added that operators still have the luxury of time regarding post-3G networks. "There is nothing really driving adoption of these technologies at this point," he said. "There is no pressing need."
