Airvana congratulates Vésper, a Brazilian operator providing services to 17 states in the Southeastern and Northern regions of the country, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, for becoming the first Latin American operator to deploy a 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network. Airvana’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO OEM customers will deliver this network to Vésper. Vésper is expected to launch commercial operations in January 2003.
This deployment will position Vésper to deliver advanced, high-speed data services such as web browsing, video and audio streaming, as well as interactive gaming to residential consumers. Enterprise customers also will be able to access corporate intranets, e-mail, and other business applications anywhere on the 1xEV-DO network.
“1xEV-DO’s high speeds, capacity, and ease of deployment make it an ideal technology to cost- effectively offer state-of-the-art, 3G broadband wireless services to our customers ” said Luiz Kaufmann, president of Vésper. “We are proud to offer our customers the fastest wireless data connection available anywhere in Brazil.”
“Vésper’s network is exciting both because it can offer a compelling service and because it can be deployed quickly and cost effectively,” said Randy Battat, president and CEO of Airvana. “The service is something many people know and crave – high-speed Internet access. It is a cost-effective system because Vésper can utilize existing CDMA cell sites and spectrum, and because Airvana’s All-IP implementation takes advantage of the advancements and lower costs available in the world of standard IP routers.”
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an “always on” wireless technology that enables data to be sent over wireless networks at broadband speeds, and at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recognizes CDMA2000 1xEV-DO as a global 3G IMT-2000 standard. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO’s peak data rates can reach up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps), with average, per user sustained rates of 600 kbps. Subscribers can connect to a 1xEV- DO network using desktop wireless modems, a 1xEV-DO mobile phone or by connecting their mobile phone or a PC card to computers, laptops or PDAs. Users will experience speeds comparable or superior to cable and DSL services and will be able to use all popular business, information and entertainment applications without any modifications to the applications. The technology can be added to existing CDMA2000 base stations with a simple channel card upgrade or overlaid on existing cdmaOne networks.
Vésper is an integrated wireless and wireline telecommunications service provider, which began commercial operations in January 2000. The company’s license area encompasses in excess 135 million people in 17 states in the southeastern, northern and northeastern regions of Brazil—including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Vésper has deployed an extensive, state-of-the-art CDMA 1900MHz wireless network throughout its properties allowing it to target consumers and small businesses that desire a fixed and/or portable service. In the coming days Vésper will evolve its CDMA network so as to also provide for the convergence of fixed, mobility and a more robust data offering. Additionally, the company will continue to address the needs of the corporate market, which requires unique voice and data wireline solutions.
