Airvana to Showcase Live Multicast, Voice Over IP (VoIP), and Quality of Service (QoS) Over 1xEV-DO at CTIA Wireless 2005

New Orleans, March 14, 2005 —  Airvana, Inc. (www.airvananet.com), a leading provider of All-IP, third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1xEV-DO infrastructure, is providing an opportunity to experience the future of 1xEV-DO with live demonstrations of 1xEV-DO Multicast and 1xEV-DO Rev A capabilities including, VoIP and QoS at Airvana's booth (#953) at the CTIA Wireless 2005 show on March 14-16, 2005 in New Orleans.

These demonstrations will highlight how service providers can deliver new revenue bearing IP services to consumers and mobile professionals over Airvana's 100 percent IP-Enabled infrastructure. The demonstrations include:

  • Multicast -- Airvana and Japan's Kyocera Corporation (NYSE: KYO - News) have teamed to demonstrate how operators can efficiently deliver rich multimedia content such as movie clips, news and sporting events simultaneously to a large number of mobile devices. Subscribers can either view live content or the content can be cached on the mobile device for viewing later. The demonstration will show Airvana's 1xEV-DO Rev 0 Infrastructure delivering video content to a specially modified version of the Passport KPC-650 1xEV-DO PC card from Kyocera's San Diego-based subsidiary, Kyocera Wireless Corp.
  • Application Level QoS -- This feature allows multiple network priorities to be assigned to different applications running on the same subscriber device and is a key technology for enabling commercial grade Voice over IP (VoIP) over 1xEV-DO. Airvana's Application Level QoS demonstration uses Internet Protocol (IP) technology and shows real time applications operating at high priority and low latency (using Multi-Flow RLP) and Internet downloads and multicast applications operating at lower priority on the same subscriber device.
  • VoIP -- The addition of Voice Services using VoIP over 1xEV-DO willbring operators significant flexibility to enhance their revenues and reduce their capital and operating expenses. Airvana will demonstratelive VoIP calls over the Internet using its QoS enabled IP infrastructure. Airvana's Rev 0 infrastructure located in New Orleans will interoperate with IP based Soft Switches and Media Gateways based in Richardson, Texas to make and receive VoIP phone calls.

"These demonstrations provide a glimpse of the future of mobile broadband," says Randy Battat, CEO of Airvana. "Voice, data, and video will come together over high-speed, IP-based networks."

Service providers are deploying CDMA2000 1xEV-DO worldwide as a high-speed mobile data service for cell phones, PDAs and laptops. It is flexible enough to support mobile multimedia applications or act as a low cost, fixed wireless broadband data service. 1xEV-DO can be deployed very inexpensively, either by upgrading an existing base station with a channel card or by overlaying the existing network with low cost CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base stations. With an overlay solution, CDMA, TDMA, GSM and new "Greenfield" operators can all enjoy the revenue opportunities of 1xEV-DO.
