The agreement is to support Nortel Network's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (1x Evolution-Data Only) program, announced by Nortel Networks on October 22, 2001. Airvana and Nortel Networks have been working together to develop All-IP high-speed data solutions for the Nortel CDMA Metro Cell. The resulting products will be based on technology used in Airvana's All-IP 3G Radio Access Network (IP-RAN), also announced on October 22, 2001, and the Nortel Networks CDMA Product portfolio.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recently recognized CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless technology under the 3G IMT-2000 standard. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an “always on” technology that enables data to be sent over PCS and cellular wireless networks at speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems, and at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology in development today.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO data rates can reach up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) under ideal circumstances, with average sustained rates expected to be around 300 to 600 kbps – similar to cable modems and DSL. Today’s cellular systems typically provide mobile data rates in the range of 14.4 kbps.
Airvana will demonstrate its commercial CDMA2000 1xEV- DO All-IP network at the CDMA Development Group’s 2001 CDMA Americas Congress in San Diego starting October 31, 2001.
