Under terms of the agreement, Airvana will supply WIN with All-IP end-to-end 1xEV-DO Radio Access Network Infrastructure including IP-RN 8000 radio nodes, the IP-RNC 8500 radio network controller and the AirVista™ Web-Based Management System for its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network in Jakarta, Indonesia. Deployment of the network is expected to commence this year, with commercial launch expected in early 2003.
“We view our deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO as a step toward advancing wireless telecommunications in Indonesia, as well as furthering our position as a wireless leader in the region,” said Teddy A. Purwadi, CEO of WIN. “We selected Airvana because the company’s true all-IP-based equipment enables the flexibility to provide exciting new mobile data services such as Web browsing, enterprise applications, and video and audio streaming, while lowering network deployment and operating costs.”
The launch of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in Indonesia underscores the promise of 3G technology in providing global operators the ability to deliver compelling wireless applications while increasing average revenue per user (ARPU) and maintaining their bottom-line operational metrics. To date, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO has been commercially launched in Asia and North America, with further networks soon to be deployed in both regions as well as Latin America.
“This deployment further signifies the continuing momentum of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology,” said Randy Battat, president and CEO of Airvana. “Not only does 1xEV-DO provide a seamless wireless data upgrade for existing CDMA networks, it can also be successfully deployed from the ground up with a greenfield strategy, as illustrated by WIN. We are looking forward to this initial deployment with WIN in Jakarta, as well as further roll-outs throughout Indonesia.” CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an “always on” mobile wireless technology that enables data to be sent over PCS and cellular wireless networks at broadband speeds, and at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recognizes CDMA2000 1xEV-DO as a global 3G IMT-2000 standard. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO’s peak data rates can reach up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps), with average, per user sustained rates of 600 kbps. Subscribers can connect to a 1xEV-DO network using a 1xEV-DO mobile phone or by connecting their mobile phone or a PC card to laptops or PDAs. Users will experience speeds comparable to cable and DSL services and be able to use all popular business, information and entertainment applications without any modifications to the applications. The technology can be added to existing CDMA2000 base stations with a simple channel card upgrade or overlaid on existing CDMA, TDMA and GSM networks.
