New Software Release Enables Advanced Push-to-Talk Services and Delivers Unprecedented Mobile Broadband Network Scalability
Airvana, Inc. (Nasdaq: AIRV), a leading provider of mobile broadband infrastructure products, today announced availability of the company’s latest EV-DO technology, which will allow operators to accelerate the roll-out of next-generation services such as IP-based push-to-talk. Further, with the availability of Airvana’s pioneering radio network controller (RNC) clustering technology, operators can efficiently scale their networks to meet ever increasing subscriber demand. EV-DO is a wireless technology that delivers high-speed mobile Internet, multimedia and entertainment services to millions of subscribers worldwide.
The release of Airvana’s latest EV-DO technology enables operators to deploy push-to-talk services that for the first time can meet or exceed the most stringent performance requirements, such as uncompromising quality-of-service and sub-one-second “push-to-beep” response time, on an All-IP mobile broadband network. By delivering superior push-to-talk services on their existing EV-DO Rev A networks, operators are able to leverage the same mobile broadband network infrastructure that they are using to provide many other IP services.
In addition to supporting the introduction of new services, Airvana’s latest EV-DO technology helps mobile operators manage their rapid broadband subscriber growth. Airvana’s most recent EV-DO software release features Airvana’s pioneering and patent-pending RNC clustering technology. The RNC is a critical network element that manages subscriber sessions, connects users to an operator’s IP network and maintains connectivity as users cross cell boundaries. With Airvana’s RNC clustering, operators can deploy multiple RNCs without introducing any RNC borders. The result is that multiple RNCs behave like a single, virtual RNC that can serve a very large number of subscribers. An operator’s use of RNC clustering helps subcribers avoid service interruption, especially when using delay-sensitive applications such as push-to-talk. Further, operators benefit by avoiding unnecessary signaling traffic typically seen in border areas of traditional RNCs.
“Any operator’s success is determined by its ability to introduce the services its customers demand, and deliver an exceptional user experience, all while reducing operating costs,” said David Nowicki, vice president of marketing and product management, Airvana. “With our new EV-DO software, mobile operators can cost-effectively deploy and scale valuable new service offerings.”
Airvana has demonstrated consistent success in delivering EV-DO equipment for operators’ macro-cellular networks worldwide. The company’s award-winning IP-based radio network technology is deployed in over 30 operator networks worldwide.
